Help the Women of Mabo build their dream cultural centre on Mer Island in the Torres Strait Islands.
The Women of MABO Cultural Centre is our concept for an arts and culture centre for our remote community on Mer Island in the Torres Strait. A space that women can retreat to, with their children or without, this uniquely designed cultural centre will offer a wide range of events and activities for women and girls of all ages, including concerts, art exhibitions, workshops, and more. State-of-the-art facilities and dedicated staff will ensure that every experience at Women of MABO Cultural Centre is one to remember.
Mer Island (also known as Murray Island) is a small, volcanic island in the eastern Torres Strait, part of Australia. It is home to the Meriam people, who have a strong and continuous cultural connection to their land, sea, and traditions. Mer Island is most widely recognised for its central role in the landmark Mabo decision, led by Eddie Koiki Mabo, which overturned the legal doctrine of terra nullius and recognised Native Title in Australia. Today, the island remains a place of deep cultural significance, with a vibrant community maintaining language, customs, and connection to Country across generations.
Your kind donation will help the women and children in this very remote Torres Strait Islander community to realise their life long dream.
